Tour Overview

We have been asked by some of our regular participants to put together a special tour of Scandinavia and the Baltics. Our retiring CEO, Mark Goodwin, has agreed to develop and lead this program and we are inviting those of you who may want to join this very special event to register for details.

Our 25 night program studies the diverse histories of, and influences on, the Baltic States and studies how each of them has coped with its independence. We witness how Finland and the newer democracies of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia have become full members of the European Union and we examine the difficulties and the potential advantages of the new European situation.

In Poland, we learn about the Teutonic knights at their mighty stronghold of Malbork, we study the history of the Polish capital Warsaw, view the historic city of Szczecin, which, as Stettin, marked the border between East and West, and explore the thousand year old port of Gdansk, with its powerful architecture and special place in history.

Finally we discover the charming mediaeval German, UNESCO protected old Hanseatic town of Lubeck before travelling through Schleswig-Holstein and Denmark's Jutland Peninsula for a final night in the Danish capital.

Please note that if you chose to combine this Scandinavian Discovery with our Discover the Baltic States tour, we include the overnight ferry (with cabin) from Stockholm to Turku in Finland as well as an overnight with sightseeing in the former Finnish capital, as well as all transfers to commence our Baltic tour in Helsinki!

Most of the cities and towns visited on this program can be explored by coach, where walking tours are relatively short and generally on the flat and all hotels have lifts with easily accessible rooms.
All our programs naturally involve some walking in order to discover better the places visited and, although we arrange porterage where this is available, participants are expected to be able to handle their own bags. Our program leaders will always try to make as much of the program as possible available for those who find walking longer distances, uphill or down steps difficult but, in same places, this cannot always be avoided.

If you have any concerns at all about your level of fitness, please do not hesitate to talk to us and discuss further with the experts who know the particular demands of each program.
