Tour Overview

The Maltese Islands, between Tunisia and Sicily, are compact and rich in history and provide an ideal extension to any European tour. 

Typical of the islands of the Mediterranean, Malta has hosted many civilisations including the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans and the Spanish. The Knights of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem were Malta's Masters from 1530 to 1798, when Napoleon's French forces invaded. However, in 1800 the British assumed control until Malta was granted independence in 1964. The Maltese people were awarded the George Cross for their bravery during World War II. While on the islands, we will learn of Malta's heritage, strategic Mediterranean importance, natural heritage and centuries old fortifications, settlements and religious sites.

Our program includes Valletta, where we learn about The Knights of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem and explore the sumptuous Palace of the Grand Masters, as well as St John’s Co-Cathedral. We discover the silent city of Mdina, the Island's ancient capital and, arguably, one of the best examples of an inhabited mediaeval city in Europe. We visit Rabat and Mosta with its impressively domed church. We view the island’s Neolithic temples and enjoy the typically Maltese fishing port of Marsaxlokk. We also explore Gozo, Malta's second-largest island, with its megalithic temples and Baroque churches, nestling in the heart of its tiny villages.

Hugh Morgan

Hugh Morgan holds a BA in European History, German, Italian and Spanish from the University of Sydney and has also studied German at the Goethe-Institut in Lueneburg and Berlin, Italian in Perugia, Spanish in Salamanca and Russian in St Petersburg.

Hugh joined Qantas in 1966 and his twenty-five year career with the airline was primarily spent in sales and marketing. He was posted overseas a number of times, escorted groups and travelled widely. As Product Manager for Qantas Connections for UK, Europe and Africa, Hugh scoured his area to compile directories featuring interesting hotels, tours and attractions. His skills were recognised formally with the presentation of a bronze medal by the British Tourist Authority for exceptional services in the promotion of Britain - the first time an Australian has received this coveted award.

After leaving Qantas Hugh completed his BA whilst running a travel consultancy and has led over fifty small groups to various parts of the world. Recent tours have included Mongolia, Siberia, Russia and the Baltic States; Iberia and Morocco; the islands of the Western Mediterranean; and various journeys through Italy, the Alps and the Adriatic.

A member of the Australian Decorative and Fine Arts Society, the Art Gallery of NSW and the National Trust, Hugh now has more time to pursue his interest in art, architecture, archaeology, genealogy ... and travel.


Most of the cities and towns visited on this program can be explored by coach, where walking tours are relatively short and generally on the flat and all hotels have lifts with easily accessible rooms.
All our programs naturally involve some walking in order to discover better the places visited and, although we arrange porterage where this is available, participants are expected to be able to handle their own bags. Our program leaders will always try to make as much of the program as possible available for those who find walking longer distances, uphill or down steps difficult but, in same places, this cannot always be avoided.

  3. Complete the details you have available (we understand your flights and travel insurance details may not be confirmed when you make your booking).
  4. Print and sign your form, then simply scan and email your form direct to info@goldencompasstours.co.nz. If you prefer you can fax your form to +44 (0) 1494 431 144, or post it to our New Zealand postal address at:

Please note we require a deposit of NZD500 per person per program with the full balance for each tour being due 70 days prior to the start of your program or programs in the UK, Europe, North Africa or Asia. 

Once the deposit payment has been taken you will then be sent your confirmation letter either by email or post (as you prefer). An invoice for the balance will be issued to you 12 weeks prior to the departure of your first tour or tours. Full payment by MasterCard, Visa or electronic bank transfer is required 70 days prior to the start of your tour.
