Tour Overview

Germany and Austria are countries imbued with Christmas traditions. Decorated trees, mulled wine, ginger biscuits and even Christmas cards all originated here and both countries are world famous for their colourful and atmospheric candlelit Christmas markets. We savour the best of these in Frankfurt, Nuremberg, Munich and Salzburg but we also visit some of the quainter, smaller traditional markets in fairytale settings such as Rothenburg, Oberammergau and St Wolfgang.

Advent is also a time when German and Austrian cities are at their best. Decorated for the festive season, they take on a special life, as we visit picture-book pretty mediaeval towns, awe-inspiring monasteries and fairytale castles.

Naturally our tour also visits the highlights of Frankfurt, views impressive Heidelberg Castle and soaks up the sumptuousness of Wurzburg's Prince-bishop's Baroque palace. We learn about the history of Nuremberg and follow Germany's Romantic Road to view its quintessential half-timbered villages. We explore King Ludwig's Wagnerian castles of Linderhof and Neuschwanstein, we discover the exquisitely painted Passion Play village of Oberammergau and we experience the Bavarian capital, Munich, with its richly decorated Royal Palace and fine art collections.

We celebrate Christmas in a comfortable family hotel in Austria's lakeland region. We join in the village festivities, take a sleigh ride through snowy mountain scenery, attend a local carol service and enjoy typical Austrian Christmas fare. We also view the gorgeous Alpine countryside, made famous in the Sound of Music, visit the fascinating Imperial Villa at Bad Ischl and are guided through the dramatic fortress city of Salzburg.

Easy

Most of the cities and towns visited on this program can be explored by coach, where walking tours are relatively short and generally on the flat and all hotels have lifts with easily accessible rooms.
All our programs naturally involve some walking in order to discover better the places visited and, although we arrange porterage where this is available, participants are expected to be able to handle their own bags. Our program leaders will always try to make as much of the program as possible available for those who find walking longer distances, uphill or down steps difficult but, in same places, this cannot always be avoided.

If you have any concerns at all about your level of fitness, please do not hesitate to talk to us and discuss further with the experts who know the particular demands of each program.
