Tour Overview

For centuries the Silk Road was the thread that linked east and west. From as early as 200BC, the Silk merchants of Xi'an, China's ancient capital, set off with their camel caravans on the long trek to distant Constantinople and to Europe beyond. From Xi'an they headed west into the Hexi corridor, the western outpost of the Chinese Empire, to reach the fortress town of Jiayuguan, and then on to the oasis town of Dunhuang before splitting into a northern or southern route, which reconnected at Kashgar on the threshold of Central Asia. They skirted the ferocious Gobi and Taklamakan deserts and crossed the 'Roof of the World', over the Pamirs and Karakorams.

Our 23-night tour allows you to follow in their footsteps and to travel the legendry route of Marco Polo. Our Silk Road adventure features some of China's most dramatic and splendid scenery and allows us to learn about the history, culture and lives of the minority peoples along our route.

For ease of arrival and departure to China, we commence our tour with the ever-stimulating Chinese capital, Beijing, and end with an exploration of fascinating, ever-changing Shanghai along with charming Suzhou.

This program includes placeswhich can only be explored on foot and where walking tours may be a little longer and not always on the flat. Accommodation may have some stairs and or have some rooms which may involve some walking to access.
All our programs naturally involve some walking in order to discover better the places visited and, although we arrange porterage where this is available, participants are expected to be able to handle their own bags. Our program leaders will always try to make as much of the program as possible available for those who find walking longer distances, uphill or down steps difficult but, in same places, this cannot always be avoided.
If you have any concerns at all about your level of fitness, please do not hesitate to talk to us and discuss further with the experts who know the particular demands of each program.
